Winemaker Notes

Once again this bowl-shaped vineyard site produced the most intensely concentrated wine of the entire vintage, a Cabernet for the true aficionado. The fruit of Blocks 18 and 19 grows on vines running north to south in river rock and clay soil along the ranch’s eastern edge. Its ripe, powerful tannins demand the finest French oak, which renowned Cognac cooperage Taransaud supplies. Rigorous attention to traditional methods of racking and aeration are necessary to realize the fruit’s potential, refine the tannins and craft the smooth, rich mouthfeel of this blockbuster Cabernet. Exotic aromas of sandalwood and spicy cigar box yield to bold, jammy blackberry flavors with notes of red currant, sweet pastilles and fennel, and long barrel aging lends a smoky, toasty finish.

Ageability: 20 to 25 years.

Other Notes

All of the grapes for our coveted Cabernets come from TR Passalacqua Ranch. These prized 17-year-old vines are located on the western slope of Dry Creek Valley at a 400-foot elevation. The quality of the fruit comes not only from the exceptional terrain of the vineyard, but also from meticulous farming practices. We grow balanced vines, using bunch thinning and limited irrigation to ensure the highest quality fruit, and dropping fruit to promote even ripening. Finally, picking only the slowly ripened morning side of each vine gives our winemaker the perfect grape. Read more about our Cabernet Vineyards.
